«What is the use of a newborn baby?»: From the history of the relationship between science and society

Abstract

The slogan of experimental scientists since the Industrial Revolution has been Benjamin Franklin's rhetorical question «What is the use of a newborn baby?» This catchword was associated with the first experiments in aeronautics, and then gained wider meaning, primarily thanks to Michael Faraday.
