The “memory space” and the “oblivion zone”: symbolism of the novels of Julio Llamazares

Abstract

The article analyzes the work of Julio Llamazares, a modern Spanish author whose novels are usually referred to as ‘” regional prose”. The symbolism of the writer’s novels is multifaceted. Landscape images serve as symbols and correlate with important themes for the Spanish society, especially, with the theme of historical memory. They touch upon the author’s subjective worldview as well as collective experience and point to the dominants that characterize the new literary image of Spain.
