The article highlights the peculiarities of approaches to analyzing the role and meaning of the constitution in legal and cultural studies, and addresses issues of maintaining cultural memory in relation to expired and current constitutions. The variety of types of artifacts associated with the constitution is illustrated by specific examples relating to different countries. Attention is paid to the efforts that are being made in different countries to preserve the originals of constitutions, as one of the most important conditions for maintaining the cultural memory associated with them.
