Abstract
A handwritten songbook is not just a collection of texts; it has its own biography, continues the personality of the compiler and reflects the cultural and historical context of the creation of the manuscript. Using the theory of “distributed personhood” by Alfred Gell, this article considers how the life events, occupations, interests of the songbook’s author are reflected in the manuscript. Two cases are studied: a notebook of a medical school student and a songbook of a young man.
Keywords
handwritten songbook; written folklore; “distributed personhood”; “biography of things”; fashion.
