In France, where the number of Islam followers is steadily growing, the issue of the visibility of the Islamic religion in the urban space is particularly acute. In socio-political debates and the media, the construction (and shortage) of mosques and prayer halls is widely discussed, with their appearance provoking the indignation of many conservative-minded French citizens. Nevertheless, new places of worship continue to emerge in various cities of the Republic, though they are often hidden within the urban architecture. The visual representativeness of Islam is closely tied to questions of integration of Muslims – both migrants and their descendants – and becomes a kind of challenge for French Muslims, which also finds expression in the work of street artists.
