Abstract
The article analyzes the theme and image of King Arthur’s sword. Acquiring the features of a leitmotif, the sword becomes the starting
point in the development of the action. The transformation of a cultural myth into a political one forms the ironic context of the narrative. The effect of disappointed expectation creates the title, forcing the reader to return to it after reading the novel.
