The concept “Hispanidad”, as formulated by Ramiro de Maeztu, remains an important element of global culture, uniting the Spanish- speaking world. His project of Spanish national identity faces today the challenges of globalization and the rethinking of the colonial past. The modern world, with its crises (pandemics, wars, technological breakthroughs, and cultural conflicts) aptly illustrates confrontation that Ramiro de Maeztu described in his book “Defensa de la Hispanidad” (1934). Through the Spanish intellectual sphere, the ideas of R. de Maeztu currently penetrate into wider European debate about the "roots of Europe" – especially in the context of the European Union and the migration crisis. His critique of liberalism, democracy and modernity has had a significant impact on modern intellectual and political currents.
