The symbolism of color in the cultural landscape

Lavrenova O.A.

Abstract

Color in the cultural landscape acts as a sufficiently developed semiotic system. In particular, colors act as symbols embodying the basic meanings of culture in space. Color symbols have a long history and polyvalent genesis, different aspects depend on the basic semiotic systems of different cultures. Color loci become both long-term semantic reference points in the cultural landscape and a field of permanent semiosis. Color symbols are a significant part of the “landscape-as-text”, primarily because they are important visual determinants that determine the perception and reading of meanings.
