The article is devoted to the cultural memory of African Americans in the USA. The author focuses on three commemorative practices: Juneteenth, Black History Month and Kwanzaa. Special attention
is paid to the transformations of the statuses and values of the events under consideration. Having analyzed the corpus of materials concerning the nature and dynamics of the development of commemorations, the author comes to the conclusion that at the present stage all of them embody the ambivalence of a difficult past, a synthesis of triumphant and traumatic narratives.
