The article discusses the basic theoretical and methodological foundations of teaching the course “Symbolology” at the university. The main types of thinking, the development of which is promoted by the new course, are named, the definition of symbolic thinking is given. The purposes and principles of teaching the course “Symbolology”, the most important sections of its content, the main thematic collections of symbols, ways of their differentiation and practical mastering by students are outlined. The conclusion is made about the importance of mastering symbols for the inculturation of personality.
